Thinking
with
representations
This course helped me develop ability and knowledge about what the roles of external representations are in design. This includes the use of different tools to plan and use external representations, by conducting a series of assignments and reading literature from design and cognitive science to reflect on different processes. By applying concepts from distributed cognition I was able to utilize alternatives within a design space and reflect on the values of representations. Developing and using design tools and methods for representations and then reflecting on what those enable and confine, helped me to understand complex design situations to generate creative ideas and solutions.
Physical & Sound Prototype
The task was to design a physical prototype to help employees at grocery stores to conveniently pack orders for delivery. After a brainstorming phase, I went for the solution of a face shield that would guide the employee and display all the necessary information on the face shield screen. From the physical prototype I moved on to a visual video prototype, including sound representations.

External representation with LEGO prototyping
Working with the LEGOS as representation helped the design team to take the role of the user, explore the experience and therefore find pain points and opportunities for improvements within the front- and backstage action.

Other representations
This course gave me the opportunity to dive deeper into the use of other representations like value maps, customer journeys, storyboards or bodystorming.
